Mats Hjelm works mainly as visual artist and film director.
His artistic practice involves mainly creating monumental video installations that relate archival footage, subjective interpretations of history, and politics in subliminal ways.
As a film director, Hjelm expands recurrent themes into long-feature documentary films with a filmic language inpired from his video installations.
Hjelm’s extended art practice includes being active in Swedish cultural politics as a debater, and as a teacher in specialized courses within contemporary art. He is also an expert cinematographer, post-production film editor, programmer and video installation specialist, currently active as a consultant in all these fields.
Mats Hjelm holds a BFA in Art Pedagogy and MFA in Sculpture from Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts & Design, Stockholm, Sweden. Post-graduate studies include a Sculpture MFA at Cranbrook Academy of Art, USA, and a Masters in Design Leadership From University of Industrial Arts in Helsinki, Finland. He has additional studies in philosophy and aesthetics from Stockholm University.
